Foundation
The proposal for the foundation of IZTECH was prepared by two İzmir parliamentarians – Rıfat Serdaroğlu and Işın Çelebi. This proposal was submitted to the Head of Parliament’s Planning and Budget Commission as stated by law on June 17th, 1992. The proposal for the foundation of the Institute was accepted in the commission and the Grand Assembly of Turkey on July 3rd, 1992 and published in the Official Gazette no. 21281 on July 11th, 1992. In this way, our institute which is composed of “Science Faculty”, “Faculty of Engineering”, “Faculty of Architecture”, “Institute of Engineering and Science” was founded in accordance with the law no. 3837.
July 12th, 1992First Rector
As the first founding rector of the Presidency (Ege University Faculty of Engineering Faculty Member) Prof. Dr. Erdal Saygın was appointed and the decision was published in the Official Gazette on November 10th, 1992 and numbered 21401. Founding Rector Prof. Dr. Erdal Saygın began to work on November 11th, 1992.
November 11th, 1992First Campus
Our institute started its activities in the building of Petkim in Basmane district of Izmir on November 16th, 1992. As of December 9th, 1994, this building has reached to 2.525 m2 by renting 3.5 times. Then the whole building was allocated to our Institute. However, with the establishment of the faculties, the existing building was not sufficient and the campus area was allocated to the Institute, most of which belonged to the treasury. Of the area allocated with the decision of the Council of Higher Education on February 17th, 1993 and numbered 93.06.244, 1.003.164 m2 part of the land was expropriated for the sake of “public interest, except for the defendant and the objected 21 parcels.
November 16th, 1992First Board of Directors
Higher Education Council decided to assign Prof. Dr. Semra Ülkü, Prof. Dr. Tamerkan Özgen and Prof. Dr. Sıtkı Aytaç as members of the board of directors in the presidency of the Rector Prof. Dr. Erdal Saygın on March 11th, 1993.
March 11th, 1993Establishment of Departments
The establishment of departments within the faculties was approved by the decision of the Executive Board of Higher Education numbered 94.20.1050 on June 22nd, 1994. The opening of the departments that will provide interdisciplinary education within the Institute of Engineering and Science was approved with the letter of Higher Education Council on June 27th, 1994. Immediately after, on June 30th, 1994, Prof. Dr. Akın Süel was appointed as the head of Institute of Engineering and Science.

For the first time, in the Institute of Engineering and Science with the letter of Higher Education Council Executive Board numbered 94.20.1050 on September 12th, 1994, it was decided to open the "Computer Software" and "City Planning" master programs in English.
September 12th, 1994Urla Campus
The foundation of our first building on our campus in Urla was laid on November 17th, 1994 by our President Mr. Süleyman Demirel.
November 17th, 1994School of Foreign Languages
The Executive Board of Higher Education decided to establish the Foreign Languages Department of our Institute on February 3rd, 1995.
February 3rd, 1995Academic Units Building
The buildings that belonged to Turkey Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) located in Cumhuriyet Boulevard were leased by the protocol dated March 14th, 1995 and repaired; It started its activities as "Academic Units" building.
March 14th, 1995Appointment of the First Deans
On June 16th, 1995, Prof. Dr. Tamerkan Özgen, was appointed as the Dean of the Faculty of Science, and Prof. Dr. Akın Süel was appointed as the Dean of the Faculty of Architecture. On June 20th, 1995, the title of the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering was undertaken by the Rector Prof. Dr. Erdal Saygın.
June 16th, 1995First Senate Meeting
The first meeting of the Senate with elected members was held on July 30th, 1996. Prof. Dr. Semra Ülkü was appointed as the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering on July 2nd, 1996. The first meeting of the Board of Directors of the Institute with elected members was held on August 23rd, 1996.
July 30th, 1996First Honorary Doctorate
First Honorary Doctorate Degree of our Institute was given to our President Mr. Süleyman Demirel on December 14th, 1997.
October 14th, 1997Undergraduate Education
The first undergraduate student of the faculties, teaching English in the preparatory class and using English as a medium of instruction were decided by the Executive Board Meeting of the Council of Higher Education on March 31st, 1998.
March 31st, 1998The Department of Culture Courses
The Department of Culture Courses was established with the decision of the Executive Board of Higher Education Council on June 20th, 2000.
June 20th, 2000IZTECH CEC and Engineering Management
Continuing Education Center was established on November 8th, 2001 by the decision of the Executive Board of the Council of Higher Education. Engineering Management master program was opened in the fall semester of 2002. The Board of Directors of IZTECH-CEC was officially established on February 12th, 2002 and started its activities.
November 18th, 2001Material Research Center
The Material Research Center was established on December 26th, 2001 by the decision of the Executive Board of the Council of Higher Education.
December 26th, 2001Chemical Mechanical Engineering and Electronics Engineering Programs
The Department of Chemistry and Mechanical Engineering PhD programs were opened in the fall semester of 2003 and the undergraduate program was started in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
2003Teknopark İzmir
As the fourth technopark in Turkey, Teknopark İzmir was founded in Izmir Institute of Technology in 2002. Teknopark Izmir started its operations in 2004. As of February 9th, 2004, the company began taking applications.
February 4th, 2004JEOMER
Geothermal Energy Research and Application Center (JEOMER) was established on May 11th, 2005 within the scope of Geothermal Energy Research and Development, Test and Training Center project supported by State Planning Organization (SPO).
May 11th, 2005Turkpatent Information and Document Unit
Turkish Patent Information and Document Unit started its activities on May 25th, 2005 within the framework of cooperation protocol signed between Turkish Patent and Trademark Authority (Türkpatent) and our institute.
May 25th, 2005Chemical Engineering Department Building
Construction of Chemical Engineering Department was completed in 2006 and put into service.
2006Office of International Relations
With the resolution of the Board of Directors dated February 6th, 2007, it was decided to establish an International Relations Office Unit affiliated to the Rectorate, and to regulate its purpose, task definition, organization and working procedures.
February 6th, 2006New Mass Spectrometer Center and Applied Quantum Research Center
With the support provided by the Ministry of Development in 2008-2009, the New Mass Spectrometer Center was established. Applied Quantum Research Center was established with the support given between 2009-2010.
2008Foundation of Laboratory of Biotechnology and Bioengineering Research Center
The Biotechnology and Bioengineering Research Center Laboratory, which was started to be established with the 2007 Investment Program, started to provide services partially in 2008 and officially opened on March 16th, 2009.
March 16th, 2009RES-IZTECH Electricity Production Inc.
The necessary measurements were made in order to utilize wind energy and it was determined that there was sufficient potential for the establishment of the Wind Power Plant in the campus. For this reason, as of 2009, RES-IZTECH ELECTRICITY PRODUCTION INC. was established with the cooperation of our institute and the company that had the power generation license.
2009ECTS Diploma Supplement Label
In 2010, the Institute was awarded the Diploma Supplement Label issued by the European Commission. This certificate, in addition to the diploma, helps relevant institutions and organizations in the recognition of diplomas and degrees from abroad.
2010Applied Quantum Research Center and Composite Materials Center Research Laboratory
IZTECH, which develops its research infrastructure day by day, established the Applied Quantum Research Center and Composite Materials Center Research Laboratory in 2010 with the support provided by the Ministry of Development.
2010Mathematics Department New Building
The Department of Mathematics was opened on July 30th, 2011 with a ceremony attended by the Minister of Transport Binali Yıldırım.July 30th,
30 Temmuz 2011ECTS Label
Our Institute was awarded the ECTS Label in 2012, the 20th anniversary of the foundation. The ECTS award was presented to our Rector by the President of Council of Higher Education at a ceremony held on May 6th, 2013.
May 6th, 2013Atmosfer Technology Transfer Office
Atmosfer TTO, which was established within the scope of TÜBİTAK 1513 TTO Support Program for the commercialization of intellectual capital as a result of academic studies and to create a single and effective interface between academia-industry, started its activities within the structure of Teknopark İzmir located on our campus in 2013 and it was officially opened on January 1st, 2014.
January 1st, 2014Foundation of ICTP-ECAR
The ICTP-ECAR Eurasia regional center, where high-quality science is produced, was opened on May 5th, 2014 with the participation of numerous important scientists. The Center continues its activities under the name of Eurasian Advanced Research Application and Research Center (AVILAR).
May 5th, 2014Molecular Biology and Genetics Department
Since 2010, our institute has adopted and implemented a vertical growth policy aiming to do critical research and train researchers in the field of Science and Engineering. The Molecular Biology and Genetics Department, which was established for this purpose, graduated the first PhD students in 2015.
2015TAMİKAM
Design, Architecture and Urban Research Application and Research Center (TAMİKAM), which was established with the aim of supporting the studies in Architecture, City and Regional Planning, Architectural Restoration, Industrial Design and other related disciplines, and to carry out interdisciplinary studies, was opened in 2015.
2015Innovation Center
The project contract for the establishment of an Innovation Center which will form the essence of the kurul Informatics and R & D City 10 and the environment that will enable the potential entrepreneurs to create technology-oriented innovation in İzmir was signed on 10 July 2012 and the Center was put into service as of April 2016.
April, 2016Research University
IZTECH, in the 25th anniversary of the establishment, achieved to take place among the 10 "Research Universities" in Turkey. Within the scope of mission differentiation and specialization project, 10 universities, which were determined by YÖK according to certain criteria, were announced by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on September 26, 2017 at the 2017-2018 Academic Year Opening Ceremony.
